Choosing the Right Prescription Sunglasses

Prescription Sunglasses Offered by our Middletown Optometrist

Summer will soon be here, and at Eyes First Vision Center, our patients are asking for sunglasses with the same features and benefits of their prescription eyeglasses. Many of our glasses and contact lens wearers prefer not to wear their lenses at the beach or at the swimming pool. Our Middletown optometrists can help!

UV Protection

Prescription sunglasses offer excellent UV protection with the same vision correction benefits of normal eyeglasses. UV rays are very damaging to the eyes and can cause a whole host of eye problems including:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Some forms of cataracts
  • Pterygium (an abnormal growth)
  • Skin cancer around the eyelids
  • Photokeratitis (corneal sunburn)

Types of Lenses

Lenses with full UV protection come in a variety of tints and shades. Your sunglass lenses can be light blue and still offer 100% protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. In addition to UV protection, many of our patients also opt for extra glare protection from reflective surfaces like water, snow, sand and concrete, particularly for driving. Most prescription sunglasses come with a polarized lens option; we add an invisible filter to the lens to eliminate any reflecting light from hitting the lens. (We can polarize your regular eyeglasses too!)

We can put virtually any lens prescription in your choice of sunglasses frame, including bifocal, multifocal, and progressive lenses.

Lenses come in a variety of materials including:

  • Glass
  • Polycarbonate
  • regular plastic called CR-39
  • Trivex (a lightweight material similar to polycarbonate)
  • Special scratch-resistant or polarized coatings and lenses

Glass lenses offer the best optical quality, but many other lighter and shatterproof lens choices are popular for sunglasses.
