Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK? Information from our Optometrist

Our optometrist here at Eyes First Vision Center wants to see patients have perfect vision and see the world clearly. Optometry patients have a dedicated ocular doctor who can determine if they are good candidates for the life-changing LASIK surgery.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK is a form of laser refractive surgery. Normally, the eyes focus images on the retina, which is in the back of the eye. With patients who have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatisms, the images are focused elsewhere. This results in their vision being blurry.

LASIK surgeries reshape the transparent cornea at the front of a patient’s eye, correcting the vision by changing where images are focused in the eye.

In a LASIK surgery, our surgeon creates a flap in the cornea. Then, the flap is raised while working to reshape the cornea itself. Sometimes, there is no need to create a flap at all. Every patient is different, and we make sure we discuss the options directly with you. We offer LASIK evaluations to determine if you are a good candidate for corrective surgery.

Who Are Good Candidates for LASIK?

Good candidates for LASIK:

  • Have stable vision
  • Must be over the age of 18
  • Be generally healthy

Who Are Bad Candidates for LASIK?

Bad candidates for LASIK are those who have:

  • Changing vision
  • Diabetes
  • The need for immunosuppressive drugs
  • Diseases affecting the ability to heal

Pre- and Post-Operation Considerations

Before you consider LASIK, consider some of the facts. Most people report having a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure. Patients do need to stop wearing contacts for several weeks before the surgery to make sure the cornea is not misshapen when measurements are taken. Patients may continue to wear glasses for their vision during this time.

Following a LASIK surgery, patients will notice a marked difference in their sight. Many have excellent vision and no longer need glasses. However, years following the procedure, patients may need to wear glasses as they age. Sometimes, glasses may be a necessity in low-light situations. It’s normal to see vision fade over time, but it’s not predictable to determine how much your vision will change as you age following the operation.
