Sports Vision Testing and Correcting

If you are an athlete, then you know how incredibly important vision is for whatever sport you are in. At our practices in Middletown, we leave no stone left unturned when it comes down to eye care in relation to sports. At our Eyes First Vision Center, we focus on the many visual tests that accompany sports performance as well as consult on which vision-correcting solutions or procedures are ideal for you.

Sports Vision Testing

When we test vision, especially in sports, we are mainly looking for the various skills that can enhance performance like hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and eye-tracking ability. Some important tests to measure this include contrast sensitivity tests, ocular alignment, eye dominance, and visual processing measurements.

Contrast Sensitivity

We start by testing the patient's ability to identify the orientation of parallel gray stripes against backgrounds that slowly begin to match the color of the stripes. Having low contrast sensitivity scores makes seeing in the shade a challenge and can hinder athletic performance as a result.

Visual Processing and Peripheral Vision

When you step on the field, many things are going on at once. This is why visual processing and how well your peripheral vision is working is paramount to success in sports like football and baseball. In order to measure this, we can assess reaction times from dropped objects or how quickly you react after you see an object.

Eye Dominance

For other sports like archery and billiards, eye dominance is an extremely important test. The Dolman test involves covering each eye and seeing which one maintains a stable view of the object you have framed as it moves closer towards you.

Corrective Procedures

Once we've made the proper assessments from these tests, we'll have a better idea of how we can enhance the vision through corrective solutions. Some of the more complex procedures can include Lasik but sometimes a solution can be as simple as getting new prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses.

Lasik

Lasik involves allowing light to properly focus on the retina by reshaping the cornea. It is a relatively simple procedure that only takes a few minutes on each eye but results in permanent vision correction.

Glasses and Contacts

Sometimes, a patient is not the best candidate for Lasik due to corneal complications that could be due to genetic or environmental factors. If this is the case, then corrective glasses or contacts can work wonders in increasing sports vision quality and overall performance.
