What You Should Know About Pediatric Eye Care

Pediatric Eye Care from Eyes First Vision Center

One of the questions we often receive relates to pediatric eye care. When should you bring your child in for eye exams? It’s important to ensure your child’s vision is as good as it can be throughout his or her life. Pediatric eye exams at Eyes First Vision Center are recommended on an annual basis. If your child has not been in to see his or her eye doctor or optometrist, do so now.

We serve patients in Bricktown, Eatontown, Hazlet, Manahawkin, Manchester, Matawan, Middletown, Red Bank, Sea Girt, and Toms River.

When Should Your Child Visit the Eye Doctor?

We recommend coming in for a first eye exam before starting school. However, the sooner you can catch concerns with vision, the more important it is to provide your child with care. For example, if you notice your child is not able to see well, bringing the child in for an exam early on can help us to correct their vision sooner. This may help your child to avoid some developmental delays that result from poor vision.

If your child has any symptoms of vision problems, bring them in to see our team right away. This may include:

  • Your child complains of headaches.
  • Young children may rub their eyes frequently or blink a great deal.
  • They may cover one eye to see objects.
  • Some will turn their head in one direction frequently so that the dominate eye can see better.
  • You notice the eye is not positioned right or is turning in or out.
  • Your child may complain of blurry vision.

When you bring your child in, we can learn more about what may be causing these concerns.

What Happens During a Pediatric Eye Exam?

Just like an adult exam, your child’s vision care will involve vision screenings and an eye health exam. We’ll provide age-appropriate tools to allow your child to communicate to us what he or she can see. This works much like an eye chart. We’ll also shine a light into your child’s eyes to look at the overall structure of the eye. If we believe there are any vision concerns, more testing may be necessary.

When children have a need for prescriptions to improve their vision, we’ll talk to you about your options. For some children, vision therapy is recommended if they have a weak or lazy eye or other structural concerns.
