Pink Eye Causes and Symptoms From Our Eye Care Professionals

One of the more common conditions our eye care team diagnosis and treats is that of pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis. This condition occurs when an infection affects the outer membrane and lens of the eye, as well as the inner portion of the eyelid itself. There are many potential causes of pink eye, ranging from allergies to a bacterial or viral infection; either way, it’s important to note that pink eye is contagious, so prompt treatment is important in preventing its spread—particularly in younger children.

Some of the most common symptoms of pink eye include:

  • Eye Pain
  • Redness and Irritation
  • Eye Dryness and Itchiness
  • Discharge from the Eye

In some cases, congestion, runny nose, and other cold-like symptoms may also accompany pink eye.

Treatment Options for Pink Eye From Our Eye Doctor

The good news is that if you or someone in your household has pink eye, our eye doctor has treatment options that can help you find relief and speed up the healing process. We’ll begin with an official diagnosis following an evaluation in our office. From there, we will customize your treatment plan based on the specific cause of your pink eye. For example, if we are able to determine that an eye allergy caused it, then we may treat it with antihistamines. On the other hand, bacterial or viral causes may need to be treated and managed with antibiotics, steroid medication, or other means.

As your conjunctivitis is treated, we recommend that you use eye drops to keep your eyes properly lubricated (if dryness or itchiness is bothersome). If inflammation is one of your symptoms, we may also recommend that you place a cold compress over the affected eye(s) throughout the day to keep inflammation under control. And if you wear contact lenses, you will need to temporarily stop wearing them during treatment.
